Leg pain usually hinders our day to day activities. Leg pain is common among

  • people who walk around much, obese people,
  • when people’s nature of job involves prolong standing/sitting

Types of leg pain:

Nerves involved in causing leg pain:

In this type the person will have pain in the legs due to the involvement of the nerves. The leg pain increases due to increased twitching of nerves. At times this may be due to nerve damage or pressure on the sciatic nerve. The one peculiar feature about this pain is that the pain persists even during resting period. Rest may not be helpful for people who have pain due to nerves induced leg pain.

 Pain in muscles of leg :

Leg pain in certain people may be due tot he involvement of the muscles ache. This pain in muscle occurs in the calf muscles or thing muscles .it may be due to some injury or any stab by the blunt items. Sudden cramping of muscles and that causes the pain in legs.

Vascular leg pain :

Vascular leg pain , in this the leg pain is due to the vessels involved in the leg. The vessels  at times get blocked , stops the flow, lower flow inside the vessels, blood vessels have a system to push back the impure blood from the lower limbs to systemic circulation . If the vessels loose elasticity or the valves inside the blood vessels fail to function. All these leads to the leg pain. This leg pain need treatments which takes time and proper medical and surgical treatment alone can be helpful.

How to know that the leg pain is not a common one but vessels are involved in causing it.?

For this we need to check the leg , under the calf muscles. There we can find the spider wed kind small vessels swollen and bluish discoloration. On touch one could easily feel the pain full  vessels which are discolored.

Not only this at times if blood vessels have less flow or no flow to the lower limbs then in the leg there will be changes in the skin color. Cold to touch and unhealing wounds are also indicates that the leg pain is due to the involvement of the vascular system of the leg.

The leg pain if its due to usual strain or prolong standing then it can  be treated and relief at home is possible, but if the pain persists then better to go for further assessment by the doctor for further treatment.

The 5 important and simple  measures to get relief from leg pain are :

  1.  Rest: helps in relaxing the muscles and helps in circulation and reduces the pain. Take on and off time out from prolong standing or continuous running around doing activities. Make rest for 5-10 min compulsory. Take rest without any compromise.

  2. Position: keeping the leg above the hip level using comfort devices like pillows will help. Using the elevated position helps in clearing the vessels and may reduce the pain.

  3. Compression : using the bandage over the area with slight firmness helps in reducing pain. The comfort over the leg by the bandage helps in relieving the pain. Compression using a metal piece while there is twitching of muscles during sleeping  or sudden muscle cramping can be relived by using a metal surface touch over the muscle that has got cramped. Sudden cramp of the  of calf muscles or thigh muscles also has got once using the touch of the metal surface.(If in hurry its hard to find a metal surface or metal piece, while muscles had cramped then a metal furniture surface /cold  iron box metal surface / key if its big metal one will be handy)

  4. Medication : few local application pain relieving roll on, gels once applied reduces the pain. pain relieving tablets under doctor’ s advice helps in reducing the pain in the leg. Simple tablets like Dolo 650, Diclofenac also will be help at times.

  5. Hot /Cold application : any one at a time may give immediate relief. Which to apply hot or Cold this choice depends on each person. Some may be comfortable with the  ice packs and it  helps  them get relief from pain.  Even dipping leg in a bucket with warm water, the heat which one can bear can be used for upto 10-20 min .This helps in relaxing the muscles and enhances circulation and reduces the pain.
    Last but not the least measure to reduce the leg pain is using electric massagers which helps in self care of ones own self independently. Few massagers are costly few are reasonable and helps in managing the issue of leg pain.
